Zambian Officers Bust Truck Drivers Hiding Ethiopian Migrants at Border
On June 13, Zambian immigration officers arrested Zimbabwean drivers Joel Mhenyu, 53, and Pfidzai Chipuriro, 36, as they tried to cross from Zambia into Botswana toward South Africa in two Volvo trucks. A search uncovered nine Ethiopian men, aged 20 to 33, squeezed into custom spots beneath the vehicles. The drivers face charges of aiding illegal entry, while the migrants were detained for skipping exit checks; the case highlights ongoing smuggling along key trucking routes amid regional migration tensions.
