Former Police Officer Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Brutal Murder of Wife
The Mpumalanga High Court handed down the sentence to 37-year-old Lucky Sandile Maduna for the murder of his 27-year-old wife, Nonkululeko Mtsweni, and the attempted murder of her friend. The court heard that the tragic incident occurred in October 2023 after the trio had spent a night out in Barberton.According to evidence presented before the court, an argument erupted between Maduna and his wife following the outing. The situation quickly escalated into a violent attack during which Maduna assaulted Mtsweni with a beer bottle. The assault was so severe that she sustained 31 injuries and ultimately succumbed to her wounds.
The court further heard that Mtsweni’s friend attempted to intervene and stop the attack. However, Maduna allegedly turned on her as well, assaulting her and leaving her injured. She survived the ordeal and later became a key witness in the case.
During sentencing, the court considered the seriousness of the offences, the violent nature of the attack, and the devastating impact the crime had on the victim’s family and community. The judge ultimately imposed a life sentence for the murder conviction, along with a separate sentence for the attempted murder charge.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the ruling, describing it as a significant victory in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide. The NPA stated that the sentence sends a strong and clear message that no one is above the law, regardless of their profession or position in society.
The authority further reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice for victims of GBVF and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
