Thai Police Bust AI-Powered Romance Scam Ring Run by Nigerian Nationals
Six Nigerian men were arrested by Thai police on 22 May 2026 during a high-profile raid on a luxury riverside condominium in Nonthaburi, Thailand, for operating an advanced, AI-powered romance scam syndicate. The operation, codenamed "Dark Room Crackdown," targeted older Thai women by using sophisticated deepfake technology to build romantic trust and manipulate them into transferring money.
🕵️♂️ The Investigation and Raid
The trail to the cybercrime ring began with an unrelated cocaine trafficking case in April 2026 involving a suspect named Patrick, where police seized 2.5 million baht in assets. Suspicious financial transactions from that investigation led detectives directly to three units in a high-end condominium near the Phra Nangklao Bridge along the Chao Phraya River.
During the coordinated raid, the suspects barricaded themselves inside, forcing the police to break the doors open. One suspect attempted to escape by climbing over a balcony, while another hid on a bathroom floor while texting to warn accomplices in neighboring units.
💻 Mechanics of the AI Scam
The syndicate operated a highly structured and technologically advanced operation:
Fake Profiles: The suspects posed as wealthy Western professionals—including pilots, US military officers, doctors, lawyers, and engineers—across platforms like Facebook Messenger, Line, TikTok, WeChat, and Zalo.
AI & Deepfakes: They utilized AI-generated Western faces and real-time deepfake video calls to convince victims they were talking to the attractive individuals in the profile photos.
Psychological Scripts: Police recovered tailored "sexy chat" and emotional manipulation scripts designed to systematically lower victims' guard and convince them to empty their savings.
The "Customs" Trap: Once romantic trust was established, the scammers claimed that an expensive gift or package sent from overseas was held at customs, requiring the women to transfer fake "clearance fees".
