Fire Destroys Ngizwe Mchunu Homestead Amid Alleged Targeting Of March Leaders
The rural residence of controversial former Ukhozi FM presenter and outspoken anti-immigration activist Ngizwe Mchunu was engulfed in flames on Sunday afternoon in Mbumbulu south of Durban in what authorities are treating as a possible targeted and retaliatory attack.
According to preliminary accounts unidentified assailants arrived at the property and allegedly demanded to know Mchunu whereabouts before setting multiple structures alight. The attackers reportedly fled the scene shortly after the fire spread rapidly through the homestead leaving extensive destruction behind.
Mchunu, who has positioned himself as the leader of the Amabhinca Nation and has been at the forefront of several anti-foreign national marches targeting undocumented migrants from countries including Nigeria, Malawi and Zimbabwe, was not present at the time of the incident. No injuries have been reported but significant damage to buildings and personal belongings has been confirmed.
The incident comes amid rising tensions in parts of South Africa where debates around immigration unemployment and service delivery have increasingly fuelled community unrest. Mchunu activism has made him a highly polarising figure, drawing both strong support and fierce criticism across different segments of society.
At this stage Mchunu has not publicly commented on the attack and his immediate safety arrangements remain unclear. Law enforcement authorities have not yet provided a detailed briefing though police were seen at the scene conducting preliminary assessments and gathering evidence.
No arrests have been made and the motive behind the arson remains under investigation. Officials have not confirmed whether the attack is directly linked to Mchunu political and social activism although the targeted nature of the incident has raised concerns over escalating retaliatory violence linked to inflammatory public discourse.
Community leaders have called for calm and restraint warning that further escalation could deepen divisions and increase the risk of similar attacks.
