Community Unites to Return Evicted Gogo to Her Orlando East Home
Within hours, community members mobilised alongside Councillor Mohoa and local civic organisation MPHAKATHI to challenge the eviction and secure Gogo's return to her home. Their collective pressure worked. By the time the afternoon sun began to dip over Orlando East, Gogo had walked back through her own front door. The exact legal grounds of the original eviction order, and whether it has been formally set aside or suspended, had not been confirmed by the time of publication.
Cllr Mohoa, who led the community intervention at 6389 Madlala Street, did not issue a formal statement, but residents present confirmed his active involvement in facilitating Gogo's return. MPHAKATHI representatives were also on the ground throughout the ordeal. Police had not responded to questions about whether law enforcement was present during the eviction or the reinstatement by the time of publication.
Orlando East has seen growing tension around housing security, with elderly residents among the most vulnerable when lease disputes or title complications arise. Evictions of older residents — many of whom have occupied their homes for decades — have drawn increased community concern across Soweto. Civic forums and ward committees have repeatedly called for more aggressive legal support for vulnerable residents facing removal without proper recourse.
What stayed with those who witnessed it was one image: the brothers from the forum, young men in everyday clothes, forming a quiet wall around Gogo as she waited — making sure she was never alone on that pavement. No uniforms, no official vests. Just people who showed up.
Some residents expressed real disappointment that larger numbers from the local forum did not come out yesterday. The question that lingers over Madlala Street now is a simple one: when the next eviction comes — and residents fear there will be a next one — will more people answer the call before an old woman is left standing outside her own door?
