30-Year-Old Woman Arrested for Posing as 65 to Claim SASSA Pension Grant
South Africa* – A 30-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with an attempt to defraud the South African Social Security Agency by posing as a 65-year-old to claim the old age pension grant.
According to officials, the suspect submitted falsified identity documents to SASSA, stating she was 65 years old in order to meet the eligibility requirement. The old age grant is only available to South African citizens and permanent residents aged 60 and above who meet the means test criteria.
The fraud came to light during a routine verification process. SASSA has been rolling out enhanced biometric checks, including fingerprint and facial verification, to confirm the identity and age of applicants and existing beneficiaries. When the woman’s biometrics were scanned, the system flagged inconsistencies between her actual age and the details on her submitted documents.
She was arrested and is expected to face charges of fraud and misrepresentation. Authorities confirmed that she will be required to repay any money received through the fraudulent application. If convicted, she could also face a criminal record and a possible custodial sentence.
SASSA spokespersons said the case highlights why the agency has been tightening controls across its system. Grant fraud costs the state millions each year and diverts funds meant for vulnerable elderly citizens who rely on the pension as their primary source of income.
The agency has urged members of the public to report suspected fraud through its hotline and warned that submitting false information is a criminal offence under South African law. Officials added that similar cases are being investigated nationwide as part of ongoing efforts to clean up the social grant system.
SASSA reiterated that legitimate beneficiaries have nothing to fear from the verification process, which is designed to protect the integrity of the grant system and ensure that payments reach the right people.
