16-Year-Old Neo Allegedly Killed By Her Aunt And Her 14-Year-Old Cousin Assist In Burying The Body

Neo Mahlangu (16), from Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, was visiting his aunt in Tsakane when he was tragically killed. It is alleged that he was beaten to death with a stick by his aunt, Andile Aalivirah Mthembu (born 1985). Her 14-year-old son is also alleged to have assisted in both the assault and the subsequent burial of the body.

Following the incident, the aunt reported Neo missing to the Tsakane police on 16 March 2022. In an apparent attempt to conceal the crime, she reportedly hired individuals to dig a large hole in the yard of her residence at 6367 Masia Street, Tsakane, under the pretext of installing a water JoJo tank. No such installation took place, and Neo’s body was buried at that location. In early April 2022, police—assisted by Search and Rescue Warrant Officer Naidoo and his team—exhumed the body after suspicions were raised. The aunt was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, as well as defeating the ends of justice and perjury. Her 14-year-old son was also implicated in the case. The incident sent shockwaves through the community. Neo Mahlangu was later laid to rest in Benoni. The Gauteng Department of Social Development expressed deep concern and condemnation regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
