SA Police Officer Who Robbed R950,000 From A Foreign National, Caught With The Money

In a shocking breach of public trust, four serving police officers from Limpopo's Waterberg district have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a violent house robbery targeting Ethiopian nationals in Mashishing, Mpumalanga. The incident, which occurred on the night of October 9, 2025, saw armed intruders—reportedly clad in police uniforms—force their way into a residential property, terrorizing three Ethiopian men and stealing R950,000 in cash.
The subsequent investigation, led by the Hawks, took a dramatic turn when evidence pointed toward the very individuals sworn to uphold the law. In a coordinated early-morning operation on October 10, authorities apprehended the four officers, aged between 35 and 48, along with a 42-year-old civilian accomplice. During the raid, law enforcement recovered not only the stolen cash but also illicit cigarettes valued at approximately R1.5 million and a significant cache of ammunition.
A particularly damning discovery was a concealed sum of money hidden within the lining of a police-issue bulletproof vest, symbolizing the profound betrayal of duty. Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, Mpumalanga's acting Provincial Commissioner, condemned the officers' actions, reaffirming the service's zero-tolerance stance toward corruption. The accused now face multiple charges, including robbery with aggravating circumstances, housebreaking, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
This case has exacerbated existing tensions within immigrant communities, who frequently endure targeted crime, and has ignited urgent calls for enhanced accountability and screening mechanisms within police ranks. As the suspects await their bail hearing in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court, the incident stands as a stark reminder of the critical need to root out criminal elements from institutions tasked with public protection.
