Foreign Robbers Terrorize Locals In Selbourne Seconds Later, They’re In Handcuffs, Check Out
Drama unfolded on 10th Avenue in Selbourne on Tuesday evening when a group of foreign national suspects allegedly attempted to rob South African customers of their cash and cellphones. What started as an ordinary evening for locals quickly turned into a scene of panic and confrontation but the robbers’ victory was short-lived.
According to eyewitnesses, three armed men stormed a local convenience store just after 7 p.m., brandishing weapons and ordering everyone to lie on the floor. Terrified customers were forced to hand over their belongings, including wallets, cash, and mobile phones. “It all happened so fast. One of them pointed a gun at the cashier while the others went around collecting phones and money,” said a shaken witness who asked not to be named.
However, their getaway did not go according to plan. Within minutes of the robbery, alert residents raised the alarm and contacted local security companies and the police. A rapid response team from a private security firm, supported by local community policing members, arrived at the scene just as the suspects attempted to flee in a silver Toyota sedan.
A high-speed chase ensued through the narrow streets of Selbourne, with the suspects firing shots in a desperate bid to escape. Police officers responded swiftly, cornering the vehicle several blocks away. Two of the suspects were arrested on the spot, while another managed to flee on foot but was later tracked down and apprehended in a nearby residential area.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Maseko confirmed the incident, commending the quick coordination between law enforcement and community members. “We can confirm that three foreign nationals, aged between 25 and 35, were arrested following a robbery on 10th Avenue, Selbourne. Several stolen items, including cash, cellphones, and a firearm, were recovered from the suspects’ vehicle,” Maseko said.
The suspects are expected to appear before the East London Magistrate’s Court later this week on charges of armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of suspected stolen property. Police have also launched an investigation to determine whether the trio is linked to a string of similar robberies reported in the area over recent weeks.
Residents of Selbourne have since called for increased police patrols, expressing concern over the growing number of robberies involving foreign nationals. “We are tired of living in fear. Every week there’s a robbery or hijacking,” said one local shop owner.
Thanks to the swift action of the police and vigilant residents, what could have been a tragic evening on 10th Avenue ended in justice and a reminder that crime, no matter how well planned, often comes to a quick and dramatic end.
