SUSPECT KILLED BY EXPLOSIVES DURING CIT HEIST IN THOKOZA

 

A cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Thokoza took a gruesome turn on Tuesday morning when a suspect was killed by the very explosives intended to breach an armoured vehicle.

According to preliminary reports, a heavily armed group of suspects launched a coordinated ambush on a CIT van using high-performance luxury vehicles to execute the attack and facilitate their escape. The assailants deployed commercial-grade explosives in an attempt to access the vehicle’s vault.

While the targeted van sustained significant structural damage from the blast, security officials confirmed that no money was stolen during the attack. However, a cache of firearms was lost in the commotion, prompting heightened concern from law enforcement about the firepower now in criminal circulation.

In a chilling revelation, police confirmed that a suspect was fatally injured during the explosion. Remnants of his body were discovered among the debris at the scene, underscoring the violent and reckless nature of the operation. Officials have issued a warning that the graphic nature of the crime scene is not suitable for sensitive viewers.

“This was a high-level, violent crime, executed with military-style precision,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo. “The suspects showed little regard for human life, including their own.”

Forensic experts and explosive ordnance specialists were deployed immediately to secure the area and gather evidence. Police are now working to identify the deceased suspect through DNA testing and are conducting a broader investigation into the gang’s affiliations.

The attack has reignited calls for a national strategy to address the growing threat of CIT heists in South Africa, which often involve sophisticated criminal networks with access to explosives and high-powered weapons.

While no arrests have been made yet, law enforcement agencies have launched a province-wide manhunt and are reviewing CCTV footage, ballistic evidence, and vehicle tracking data. Authorities are also appealing to the public for any information that could assist in tracking down the remaining suspects.

The incident has further rattled communities in the region, with residents expressing fear over the escalating boldness and brutality of such crimes. Police have vowed to increase patrols and intensify intelligence-led operations to disrupt these syndicates before they strike again.
