"Officers tactically entered the premises & conducted a search." Fridge hideout fails murder suspect

The TRU of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has arrested a 32-year-old man they believe is involved in the killing of a community patroller in Soshanguve, Tshwane.

He was apprehended despite his best efforts to hide behind a refrigerator, demonstrating the efficacy of an operation directed by cooperative intelligence.

By working together, the JMPD TRU and the SAPS were able to track down and apprehend the criminal on Saturday, April 19, 2025. Based on credible information about the suspect's location, which was connected to an ongoing murder investigation being handled by the Soshanguve SAPS, the operation was launched.

According to Superintendent Xolani Fihla, a spokesperson for the JMPD, the suspect was located to a certain residence in Soshanguve after matching the description given to law enforcement. This led to the confirmation of the arrest. "Police officers entered the building and searched it tactically.

Superintendent Fihla stressed the strategic method used by the JMPD TRU in carrying out the arrest, describing how the wanted person was discovered hiding behind a refrigerator in the kitchen and was promptly detained. An illicit firearm and ammo were also recovered as a consequence of the operation's success. A live round of ammunition and an unregistered firearm were discovered during the arrest.

Superintendent Fihla continued, "The weapon has been taken in and will be tested for links to other crimes." This could lead to more revelations as the investigation continues. Officers engaged were praised by JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca for the operation's professional and efficient implementation.

"This swift and decisive action by our Tactical Response Unit demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the JMPD to combat serious crime and support our colleagues in law enforcement," Jaca told reporters. In order to see that the perpetrators of these horrible crimes are punished, we will keep cooperating closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS).

By making this arrest, we are making it plain that we will not stop until our neighborhoods are secure and the perpetrators are punished. Accused of murder and illegal gun ownership, the suspect is now in custody at the Soshanguve SAPS and is due to make an imminent court appearance.

The JMPD TRU and the SAPS's productive partnership exemplifies the value of inter-agency cooperation in combating major crime and protecting communities.

We will use ballistic testing to investigate the suspect's possible involvement in additional criminal actions, which is heightened by the discovery of the unlicensed firearm.
