Mother of convicted murderer Sibusiso Mahlangu cried inconsolably during and after sentencing

In a dramatic conclusion to a highly publicized trial, the Gauteng High Court handed down a life sentence to Sibusiso Mahlangu, 34, and his wife Lerato Mahlangu, 33, on Friday, March 7. The couple was convicted of multiple serious charges, including fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and the murder of Sibusiso Sitebe, Lerato's former partner and the father of her child.

The sentencing marked the culmination of a legal process that began with their arrest in 2023. During the sentencing phase, defence counsel Lidile Mphela argued for leniency, suggesting a minimum sentence of 15 years. Mphela highlighted Lerato's youth and potential for rehabilitation, noting her apology to the affected families as a sign of remorse.

However, the court ultimately decided on the maximum penalty, reflecting the gravity of the crimes committed. The decision was welcomed by Sitebe's family, who expressed relief and closure following the verdict. The emotional impact of the sentencing was evident, with Sibusiso Mahlangu's mother seen crying uncontrollably during and after the proceedings.

The case has drawn significant attention due to its complex nature and the personal relationships involved. The life sentence underscores the seriousness with which the legal system views such crimes, emphasizing the importance of justice and accountability in South African society. As the couple begins their life imprisonment, the community and the families affected can begin the process of healing and moving forward.
