Suspected Limpopo Tower Battery Thief Dies After Mob Justice Attack

A suspected thief accused of stealing tower batteries has died after being assaulted by a group of community members in a suspected mob justice attack.

According to police reports, the incident took place in a village near Polokwane on Monday. The deceased, a 32-year-old man, was allegedly caught attempting to steal backup batteries from a local telecommunications tower. Community members, angered by the ongoing theft of essential infrastructure, took the law into their own hands and severely assaulted him.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident, stating that officers were alerted and responded to the scene. "Upon arrival, they found the man unconscious with multiple injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds," said Ledwaba.

Police have opened a case of murder and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack. Authorities have also urged the public to refrain from acts of mob justice and instead report crimes to law enforcement agencies. "We understand the community's frustration with crime, but taking the law into your own hands is not the solution. Those responsible will face legal consequences," Ledwaba added.

Telecommunications infrastructure theft has been a growing problem in the province, with criminals targeting batteries and cables, leading to network disruptions. Authorities have called for increased security measures and community cooperation in combating such crimes.

No arrests have been made yet, and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
